HBS student tries to choke a cop, while dressed in drag!

This story is from the realm of, “You just can’t make this stuff up.” A couple HBS students, who were dressed as women for the night (imagine that!) got kicked out a bar because they were too intoxicated. They became angered when they were not allowed back in to the bar to retrieve their belongings. The manager attempted to locate said items, but without any success. One of the men goes berserk and starts choking a cop, who had arrived at the scene. Not a good story for the stigma of privileged MBAs who lack morals, certainly not a good story for HBS, and lastly it is not a good story for the guy involved here. Going to be tough to explain why he has an aggravated assault on an officer on the old rap sheet.

This story is proof that life can always get worse. If you don’t get into B-School it could be a blessing in disguise, as maybe you were destined to choke a cop…

Yankees win, I’m tired, and Yale?!?

Last night the New York Yankees clinched their record-setting, 27th world championship. It was a great night and a great performance by the team (really just Hideki Matsui). If it isn’t already, I think November 4th should be a national holiday in Japan celebrating all that Matsui is. The 6 RBIs in a World Series game was a record and his performance earned him MVP honors for series. I would have still voted for Rivera, but without Matsui we would have never one this game. What a season and I couldn’t be happier for all the guys on the team because they worked hard and they deserve the title. Friday’s parade down the Canyon of Heroes should not be missed because this city goes wild when the Yankees win.

All these late night games have taken their toll on me and I am like a zombie today! You can tell the people who stayed up to watch the game last night because they are either sleeping or “spacing out’ at their desks. I fall into the later category. I decided to write this post before I fall asleep in a pool of my own drool.
Lastly, I have been looking around for another school to apply to. Why? I don’t know, sheer masochism…but in my search I started to look at Yale. Why, no clue, maybe because it was close to home? I find it to be somewhat of a pariah in the MBA applicant universe. It is ranked as a great school (top 15 or so), but I never hear anyone say, “Yale is my #1.” Heck, I don’t even know anyone who went there,  applied to go there, or  thought of submitting an application. I don’t know what it is about the program, maybe it is its general management focus? The fact that it doesn’t specialize in finance? It is a very prestigious school with an alumni network that is pretty tight. So why the cold shoulder from upper end applicants? Maybe I am looking to hard at this and lots of people are applying to/want to go/are dying to be a Yale Bulldog, but I just don’t see it. So what say you, have you thought about Yale, are you applying there, is Yale like the red-headed step child of MBAs? Help me out people!

Philly vs NY (Daily Show Style)

This is a great look at Philly vs. NY fans. Having lived and experienced both fans I can say that NY fans are *typically* (and I say typically because these people on the video are the exception) classier than Philly fans are. I went to an Eagles vs. Redskins game at The Linc (the new Eagles stadium) and was just abused from moment 1. I did have a jersey on, all I had on was a hat. I expected this from the Philly fans, but even I was surprised at how bad it got. NY fans will certainly “give you the business” too, but they usually do it in a more witty way than just spewing curses and terrible things about my mother. With all of that said, this video is NOT safe for work unless you have it pretty low. It is completely worth the risk though, so go a head and play it!

The evidence…

So, as promised here are some pictures of my Halloween costume.  I was thinking of putting myself down as a trans-gender applicant, which would make me extremely unique in the applicant pool! Although after looking at them, I think it would certainly hurt my candidacy! Be kind in your comments, as this is not my proudest moment…

The beginning of the night

My fiancee and I as one another....doesn't she look happy? (yes I have boobs in the picture)

The drinking begins...

She grabs my beer and I grab her glass of wine

Dirty flirt

Many drinks deep and my seductive side comes out (very creepy)

Weekend Happenings

Halloween night was a lot of fun, as I had a get together with some of my high school friends. Two are married, one of which is having a baby! This is just making me feel old…but alas, it was great fun! Lots of food and drink (especially drinks). As promised I dressed up as a female (the ugliest female in the history of females), and people enjoyed the costume for a little while and then it started to creep them out. I can’t really blame them for that…Pictures are not available right now, but look for them either tonight or tomorrow.

I woke up early on Saturday morning because I had to journey back north for a dentist appointment. I really don’t like the dentist because i am guilty of never flossing, even though I should. You can’t lie to a dentist either because he or she will know immediately. Your teeth tell them all they need to know, there is no way to game the system. I would like my chances better against a lie detector…

Fulham beat Liverpool on Saturday, which angered my English colleague. Notre Dame won, which angered the rest of college football fans. The Yankees also won, although I fell asleep in the ninth inning, so I didn’t actually witness it.

No essays got done this weekend because wedding duties called and it was my fiancee’s b-day on Sunday. I took her to Babbo in NYC, which is a great restaurant that you should all try if you have the chance. I wined and dined her and we both had a great time. The Yankees didn’t help me either, keeping me up late (again) to win another and put them one win away from the championship! Unfortunately this means that this week will be cramming for me….how does this always happen. Why can’t real life just neatly fall in place behind MBA stuff? It would make things so much easier. NYU essays, here I come!

Halloween Weekend & Happy Hour Recap

Last night was a pretty good night for myself…we had a work happy hour (more on that later) and the Yankees played a very nice Game 2 of the World Series.

The happy hour turned into a pretty solid night out for me and my colleagues. We went to Green Rock, which is in Hoboken, NJ. It was a $1 beer night there, so there was a lot of drinking to be done. We tossed back quite a few beers in a short amount of time. There were 6 of us (4 guys and 2 girls) and by the time I left (around 7:30) we had drank 48 beers already. Needless to say I needed to get out of there, so I could come to work today and function. I left about 7:40, which got me home just in time for the first pitch of the Yankee game. Four of my colleagues closed the bar last night, so one of them is taking a “personal day,” two are still drunk and wearing the same clothes from yesterday, and the other is severely hungover. I made a fantastic decision! While I am sure it was an epic night, I can’t jeopardize my Halloween weekend festivities for a cheap thrill during a happy hour!

Tonight I am heading down to Philly to a friend’s house for a Halloween party. These are high school friends, so things should get pretty aggressive in the drinking department. My fiancee is accompanying me to the party and we are dressing up as one another. Pretty lame, but it is cheap, and it is funny to see me as a woman…I will hopefully have pictures for you, so you can see just how disturbing it was.

Dressing in drag is pretty much going to be enough for the weekend, as the only other things I have planned are a dentist appointment on Saturday (after an all night drinking binge, that should go poorly) and completing my NYU essays (or at least starting to complete them). I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend and I expect a lot of picture in the MBA blogosphere on Monday! (Non should top the horror that mine will elicit)

Cornell done & NYU Plans

Got the final revision back from Yoda yesterday (just as the Yankee game started, but I will not be discussing that). I need to make the final changes tonight and I should be on track to submit this bad boy tomorrow. A little late, but at least it is the best it can be. My sight then turns to The Violets of NYU. I have some serious work to do on those guys because I haven’t touched them in over a month! My plan is to get them done by the 8th, so I can submit them to the NYU specialist and receive his/her comments in time for a quick final revision.

I have a visit scheduled for the 11th of November for Stern. This is the 2nd year in a row that I have visited on the 11th (Veteran’s Day), but this time I will be searching for things to spice up my essays. Adding a personal touch to my Stern experience will be the last thing I do with these essays and should make them really stand out. I am counting the days until the 15th, as I want this process to come to a swift and successful conclusion.

Not much else going on these days, but hoping the Yanks can come through with a big win tonight! BTW…work happy hour tonight, so hopefully there will be some good stories or hangovers here tomorrow.

Weekend Rewind (Wedding, Yankee, & Cornell edition)

What a weekend! Lets get the rewind started!

Friday – My future brother in-law got married on Friday and I was lucky enough to be a part of it. A day of drinking, eating, and dancing to excess. This was the most elaborate wedding I have ever been to and it was a great time. I wanted to share the following story with you to show:

A.) exactly how drunk I was

B.) how I embarrass my fiancee no matter where I go

The story begins at the introduction of the bridal party. This is typically a pretty easy thing to do, you just walk out when your name is called and everyone claps, even though they have no idea who you are. This wedding however was slightly different. First there was a large screen that showed each couple as they walked out for introductions. Second, this was a north Jersey wedding, so everyone was expected to bust out their best dance move or do something funny. Lastly, my fiancee and I were the second to last couple to be introduced, so I got to see everyone’s  intro.

Because big things are expected of us, my fiancee and I begin planning out our routine. We decided that we had to come up with multiple things to do because we were the 10th couple to go and our material could be stolen before we even enter. We plot out 3 routines and feel we are ready to wow the crowd.

The parents get introduced first and then the bridal party begins. I am pretty far in back of the line, so my fiancee and I sneak up to the front to get a better look at our compatriots dance moves. The first few are uninspiring and a few people simply strut their way to the dance floor. My fiancee and I are feeling very confident that we are going to dazzle (dancing with the stars style). Then like a scene from a horror movie, it all goes to pieces. The first was when someone threw the fishing pole out and the female began dancing back towards him. Move #1 gone (I make an incredible fish). Next, one of the men picks up the woman and carries her to the dance floor. Move two gone (but my back was saved, sorry honey). Then to my horror I realize that our third move isn’t possible. We had planned to twist our way to the dance floor, but we didn’t know that the room was carpeted. No one can do the twist on a carpet, not even my father, who is the twist master. There is only one person ahead of us now and we are panicking. What are we going to do? We can’t just walk out there can we? CAN WE? We turn to each other and I say to her, “You dance and I will do my thing behind you.” (Not in a sexual way, but in a dancing kind of way) We are up….I hear our names called and the doors open.

The spotlight hits me and the crowd roar for us (slight exaggeration). I still have no idea what I am going to do. My fiancee begin busting a move and then without warning I throw open my suit jacket and begin dancing while accentuating that it is open. If you want to picture the scene, I look like a flasher who is dancing behind a woman at this point…creeping everyone out. I immediately realize that I need to change the move up, as we are almost half way to the dance floor. What happens next I cannot explain and do justice to it. I turn to the left and see the camera that was filming me…I then start giving it “the guns.” You know the move (or hopefully you don’t) where you pretending to be shooting things from both hips. Why I did this, the world may never know. Needless to say it was not one of my finer moments and I embarrassed my family and my fiancee. Later in the night, I was asked to pose for a picture (with my sis) to re-enact my “dance” move. Here it is in all its glory…

Disgraceful

Disgraceful

Saturday – There was a brunch the next morning and we left right after that. I got home and laid on the couch all day, as the weather was terrible here in NJ. Perfect day to rest and recuperate. I watched Notre Dame win, and the Yankee game was canceled. I fell into a deep sleep at about 10 and didn’t wake up until 9ish. It was a great day!

Sunday – Liverpool vs. Man U was a decent enough game, so I watched that while working on my final version of my Cornell essays. I finished that up and watched football the rest of the day. I did make it outside for a while, though because it was such a  beautiful day. The night was reserved for a huge Yankee win. They got lucky with how they scored there runs, but if you put yourself in good enough positions, sometimes you get a break. Back to the WS for the first time since 2003. Bravo and congrats Yanks. You deserve it!

Hope everyone had a great weekend. My final deadline is coming up on the 15th, so I am going to go back into essay mode. Gotta push on through to the otherside!

Work Stuff & The Souls @ The Pony…

For the last week I have been like a lost puppy searching for my owner and wandering aimlessly through the day. I have finished all my projects at work and with none on the horizon, it has become like a Wild West Ghost Town at my desk. It didn’t used to be like this…I used to be inundated with requests to open new broker accounts that I had to analyze and write a report on, but since the financial crisis that has slowed to a halt. The brokers aren’t trading as much as they used to and that means less new accounts for me to work on. Pretty soon I am going to have to start coming up with new projects to justify receiving a check on the 15th and 30th…The problem with that is my department’s budget has been cut pretty badly, so their isn’t much cash going towards projects these days. Not a good situation. These are the times when bosses start looking around and seeing if they really need all the people they have.

About a week ago, my boss pulled me aside and told me that he wanted to hire some junior people for our group and put me in charge of them! I was pretty excited about it, as it would give me some managerial responsibilities and a leadership role. I found out yesterday that management put a deep freeze on hiring, so that isn’t going to happen for a while (if ever). Needless to say, I was bummed out about that, but I suppose all things happen for a reason.

Enough of my depressing work speak! One of my favorite things of the year is coming up, and of course I am talking about seeing the Bouncing Souls at the Stony Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. Every year these guys go to “The Pony” and play 4 post-Christmas shows. My brother and I usually try to make it to one of them. We are usually hot sweaty messes by the time we leave, but it is a great time and they put on a great live show. Pre-Sale is on now, so if you are in the Jersey area and enjoy the Souls, it is a can’t miss!

I have a wedding to attend tomorrow, so no posts, sorry. Isn’t waiting to hear about an admissions decision fun????

The GMAT is becoming more important

This Businessweek article talks about the increasing importance of the GMAT to top financial and consulting firms. Recruiters seem to be weeding people out based on GMAT scores. The article doesn’t exactly spell out what score is the cutoff for these institutions, but it does make this reference, “even ’slightly below 700 might not be a help.” The beginning of the article also talks about how some schools are alerting students about this and in turn the students are re-taking the exam. One school is even offering a 4 day course for in coming students.

My take on this is that this would be the same as filtering out people based on SAT scores, which I know does happen. The tests themselves do represent your ability to retain information and apply in to solve a problem, but it doesn’t measure more qualitative things that go into making a good leader/worker. If I got 690 on the exam, which I did, does that make me a better candidate for an I-banking job at  Goldman than someone who gets a 650, or am I worse than someone in the 700s? That I cannot say…what if someone is a bad test taker or a great test taker? Does my 690 mean that I would pick better stocks for my hedge fund than that 650?

I suppose that this is really used because recruiters have a bevy of qualified candidates and they need to widdle the pile down somewhat. The GMAT is something we will all have in common, the great equalizer, if you will. So this is a heads up to all those who plan on “making it rain” for the rest of their lives…you better have the GMAT score necessary to get into the club!
